For Untold Stories of Idaho Falls, we’re uncovering the legend of the Bootleg King of Idaho. A taxi company owner who turned his business into a front for bootleg liquor, he took orders through a local cigar store and relied on an intricate system of signals across town to warn drivers when the cops were nearby. Hidden on an island in the Snake River were massive stills powering what newspapers later called the largest bootlegging operation this region had ever seen. This story comes to life through Chloe Doucette and Jeff Carr of the Museum of Idaho, bringing history out of the archives and into the underground.
